Group Assessment and Intervention

Phase I — Group Assessment

Is unresolved conflict on your team bogging down productivity and lowering morale in your organization? A facilitator can assist you with a review of your workplace climate in order to help management and staff better understand areas of concern. FS will help identify ways to address the issues that are affecting the effective functioning of your team.

Commonly referred to as Phase I of a group intervention process, a group assessment generally includes individual (or small group) interviews with staff and a review of any relevant organizational documents (e.g. statements of mission and vision, past strategic planning documents, etc.). In large group contexts, a written survey may be used as a tool for gathering viewpoints and information.

The facilitator works closely with the organization to:

+ Identify recurring themes in the conflicted environment
+ Begin to identify possible underlying causes of conflict
+ Identify specific recommendations for moving the situation, as a whole, towards resolution and renewed productivity as part of Phase II
+ Articulate (in a written report) both the themes and causes in the conflict as well as recommendations for addressing the challenges and achieving resolution

Phase II - Group Intervention

The group intervention, or Phase II, is the implementation of the recommendations that the facilitator put forward in the assessment report (see Group Assessments). Conversations around fees, process and timelines are revisited and reevaluated at the onset of this stage as well.

Typical interventions include:

+ Coaching – for management and/or individual staff
+ Interpersonal mediation – between 2 staff, between a staff person and a manager
+ Facilitated conversations – clarifying decision making structures, role clarification, facilitated feedback sessions
+ Group facilitation – critical incident debriefing, developing a conflict resolution protocol
+ Training – Building Respectful Workplaces, Interpersonal Conflict Resolution

FS has a standing offer agreement with the federal government for mediation and conflict intervention services.
